NGC 549 (01h 25.1m -38° 00') Discovered by JH (h2413). The gx identified as N549 in SGC, ESO and RC3 is E296-026 at 01 25 28.8 -38 16 01. This "fairly faint" edge-on lies 15' N of JH's position at 01 25 25.2 -38 00 51 (2000). The other members in the group (N534, N544 and N546) were given very accurate positions. (R)N549 is a compact gx 3.8' NNW of N544 at GSC position 01 25 07.1 -38 00 28. This gx matches JH's declination although the RA is 18s too small. (R)N549 is also much smaller and fainter than the edge-on but is closer in position (off only in RA) and is a better match with JH's description "eeeF, S, R, vgbM. The 4th of a group of 4" compared to his other descriptions for the group. So, the identification of N549 is not certain although (R)N549 appears to be a better choice. |
